This is a proposal by Frank Sheriff, Blaine Tolentino and myself to the City of Honolulu for their Kapolei Hale building. It was selected as one of three finalists out of over 50 proposed works.
Pre-contact, Hawaiians used the Kapolei area as a season marker. If one stands in Waikiki where the aquarium is today, and looks towards the west, the time of year when the sun sets directly over Kapolei marks the summer solstice.
Thus, I wanted to create a piece which represented the shape, and reflective quality of the sun. The model is made up of all the subdivisions of Kapolei, cut from aluminum and organized into a disk – sunlike shape.
Fingers, toes and eyes – all crossed.
